What Is Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit?
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is the newest Universes Beyond set, releasing August 14, 2026. It follows Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and the company of Dwarves on their legendary journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain — brought to life through Magic cards.
This is the second major Tolkien collaboration in Magic history — and the first to be fully Standard-legal. Every card in the main HOB set is playable in the most popular competitive format and remains relevant for two years. The companion HOC set adds eternal-legal Commander cards not legal in Standard.

New Mechanics in The Hobbit
Spoiler season revealed three brand new mechanics and several returning ones. Here’s what every player needs to know before Prerelease.
Storied / Enduring Story — New
An ascend-style mechanic. Once you control three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas simultaneously, you permanently gain an “Enduring Story.” Storied bonuses stay active for the rest of the game — once you have it, you have it forever.
Commander decks are naturally loaded with historic permanents. Storied is one of the easiest new mechanics in the game to activate in the format. Key Storied cards: Thorin Oakenshield (cost reduction), Bifur, Melodic Rider.
Recruit — New
Tied to Lake-town’s humans. When you Recruit, draw a card and discard a card — if the discarded card is a nonland, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. Mechanically similar to Connive, reframed as storytelling. In token-doubling strategies, every Recruit trigger creates two creatures.
Key Recruit cards: The Queen of Dale, Bard, King of Dale (who doubles those tokens).
Hone Counters — New
A new counter type on equipment cards — specifically Sting, Bilbo’s Sword. Hone counters increase the stat boost of the equipment over time, growing more powerful the longer it stays on the battlefield.
Amass Goblins — New Application
Amass returns but this time creates Goblin Army tokens — the fourth creature type to use the Amass mechanic alongside zombies, orcs, and slivers. Importantly, all Amass abilities combine creature types, so Goblin Army tokens stack with your existing armies. Key card: Bolg of the North.
Ferocious — Returning
Returns from Khans of Tarkir as a main-set mechanic for the first time since that block. Rewards controlling creatures with 4 or more power. Appears in the Black/Green warg and wolf archetype. Key card: The Chief Warg.
Adventure — Returning
The set’s primary mechanic returns from Throne of Eldraine. Cast the spell half first, exile the creature, then cast the creature from exile later. Two spells on one card. Every Adventure card represents a multi-part narrative moment from Bilbo’s journey. Key cards include Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar’s Plot and Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane.

Collector Boosters — The Premium Experience
Collector Boosters carry the highest concentration of premium treatments in the entire set:
Surge Foils — Enhanced foil with a distinctive shimmering pattern beyond traditional foil treatment.
Dwarven Language Cards — Five cards printed in Tolkien’s own Khuzdul Dwarvish script: Arcane Signet, Treasure Vault, Dwarven Warriors, The Reaver Cleaver, and Mox Amber. These are the equivalent of the Elvish and Black Speech cards from The Lord of the Rings set.
Dragon Hoard Frame Cards — 25 cards with a special Smaug-inspired frame treatment. Available in non-foil, traditional foil, and surge foil — surge foil exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Book Cover Treatment — Cards reimagined as classic Tolkien book cover illustrations. Confirmed Book Cover cards include The Lonely Mountain, Gollum Riddle Master, Thranduil, and Bard. Surge foil Book Cover variants exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Gleaming Gold Smaug — The headliner card. Approximately 500 copies exist worldwide across all languages. Exclusive to Collector Boosters. Always printed in English regardless of language booster. The rarest pull of the entire set.

Scene Boxes — Bag End Banquet & Treasures of Smaug
Two premium Scene Boxes bring iconic Hobbit moments to life through connected panoramic cards.
Bag End Banquet captures the cozy chaos of the unexpected dinner party that opens the story — Bilbo’s home overrun with Dwarves, Gandalf presiding over the chaos, the crack-the-plates sequence unfolding. The Scene Box includes Gandalf, Party Guest, Fíli and Kíli, Joyous, Ori, Plate Stacker, and more Dwarven company cards alongside the panoramic scene art.
Treasures of Smaug captures Bilbo creeping into Erebor and encountering Smaug sleeping on his mountain of gold — the most visually spectacular moment in the entire story. Includes Dragon-Cursed Halls, Smaug the Impenetrable, and the full hoard panorama.
Both Scene Boxes include 3 Play Boosters, 6 borderless eternal-legal scene cards in regular and foil, and art-only display cards for the included easel. Scene cards are mechanically playable Magic cards — not just art pieces.

Best Hobbit MTG Cards for Commander
Commander is the most popular Magic format in the world — and The Hobbit is built for it. The legendary creature count is extraordinary, the new mechanics reward Commander gameplay, and the HOC set adds exclusive eternal-legal commanders alongside major reprints.
The standout commanders from the HOB main set:
Smaug the Magnificent — The most-built commander from the entire set with over 1,500 EDHREC decks registered. A Treasure-fueled mono-red Dragon that dominates the battlefield.
Thranduil, the Elvenking — The surprise of spoiler season. A Sultai (Black/Green/Blue) 5/6 Elf Noble who has all activated abilities of every Elf in your graveyard and draws two cards whenever a legendary Elf enters. The card elf Commander players have been waiting years for.
Bard, King of Dale — An Azorius mythic that doubles every card draw and doubles every token created. Two of the most powerful Commander effects on one card.
Thorin, Mountain-king — The flagship Dwarf tribal commander.
Bilbo, Thief in the Night — The mythic value engine. Recurs your best spells every combat.
The Queen of Dale — A two-mana mythic that Recruits every time an opponent casts their first spell each turn. Up to three triggers per round in a four-player game.
From the HOC Commander set: Smaug the Impenetrable (Rakdos), Gandalf Party Guest (Jeskai), Sauron the Dark Lord (Grixis), Tom Bombadil (five-color).
Major reprints in HOC: The One Ring, Orcish Bowmasters, Mox Amber, The Reaver Cleaver, Rivendell, The Shire — all receiving Hobbit-era art treatments.

The Hobbit vs The Lord of the Rings — How They Compare
Standard legality — Lord of the Rings was not Standard legal. The Hobbit is — the first Tolkien MTG set to be. Cards remain relevant for two full competitive seasons.
Different story — Lord of the Rings covered the Fellowship and the War of the Ring. The Hobbit covers Bilbo’s earlier journey — a completely different cast and era.
Different mechanic — Lord of the Rings used the Ring mechanic. The Hobbit uses Adventure plus three brand new mechanics: Storied, Recruit, and Hone counters.
Different chase card — Lord of the Rings had The One Ring (one copy in English). The Hobbit has Gleaming Gold Smaug (approximately 500 copies worldwide). Both are among the rarest cards in modern Magic history.
The One Ring reprint — The One Ring is reprinted in the HOC set with Hobbit-era art. Players who missed the original printing now have access. Existing copies will likely see pricing pressure as a result.
