The Hobbit MTG Prerelease at Skillshotz Gaming — Deerfield Beach, August 7 & 8, 2026
Magic: The Gathering is going back to Middle-earth — and there’s no better place in South Florida to experience it than Skillshotz Gaming in Deerfield Beach.
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit releases worldwide on August 14, 2026. But if you want to play it first, the Prerelease runs August 7–8 — an entire week of early access events where you crack packs, build a deck on the spot, and play The Hobbit before anyone else can.
Skillshotz Gaming is one of South Florida’s highest-tier Wizards Play Network stores. That matters for Prerelease — and we’ll explain exactly why below.
⚠️ Prerelease kits are for in-person play only. We do not ship Prerelease packs. You must attend the event at Skillshotz Gaming in Deerfield Beach to participate. Spots are limited — register now.

What Is a Magic: The Gathering Prerelease?
A Prerelease is a special event held at local game stores in the week before a new Magic set officially releases. You get to play with the new cards before they’re available anywhere else.
Here’s how it works:
- You receive a Prerelease Pack containing 6 Play Boosters from The Hobbit set, plus a traditional foil rare or mythic rare card and a Spindown life counter
- You open your packs, look at what you pulled, and build a 40-card deck using those cards plus as many basic lands as you need
- Then you play! This format is called Sealed, and it’s one of the most exciting, skill-testing formats in Magic
- Everyone is working with random packs — no pre-built decks, no advantage from collection size. It levels the playing field completely
Prereleases are casual and welcoming. Whether you’ve been playing Magic for twenty years or just learned last week, a Prerelease is the perfect event to explore a new set.
Why Play The Hobbit Prerelease at Skillshotz?
There are a handful of game stores in Broward County running Prerelease events. Here’s why Skillshotz Gaming is worth the drive from Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, or anywhere else in South Florida.
We’re a WPN Premium Store — and That Changes Everything
Skillshotz Gaming holds WPN Premium / Tier 6 Legendary status with Wizards of the Coast — the highest recognition a local game store can earn in the Wizards Play Network.
What does that mean for you at Prerelease?
For Commander Party events (running August 21–27 and September 18–24), WPN Premium stores like Skillshotz receive traditional foil Bilbo, Luckwearer promo cards — the exclusive foil version that most stores simply don’t get. Non-WPN Premium stores receive the non-foil version. Ours are foil. If you want the best promos, you come to the best store.
The Twisted Vine Craft Bar — Only at Skillshotz
While you’re building your sealed deck and plotting your path through Middle-earth, our in-house craft bar — The Twisted Vine — is fully stocked and open.
Every new tale unveils a new twist. There’s no other MTG venue in South Florida where you can crack a Collector Booster and crack open a cold one at the same time.
Three Immersive Game Rooms
Skillshotz Gaming isn’t just a table in a strip mall. We have three fully immersive game rooms built for competitive and casual play. Big events feel right here.
A Community That Shows Up
We consistently run some of the largest MTG events in South Florida. When The Lord of the Rings prerelease happened, our players showed up. Expect the same energy — and more — for The Hobbit.
What Is Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit?
This set follows Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and their company of Dwarves on the legendary journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain.
Key facts:
- Release date: August 14, 2026
- Prerelease: August 7–13 (that’s this event!)
- MTG Arena: August 11, 2026
- Format legality: Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Commander — fully legal across all formats
- Primary mechanic: Adventure — cast the spell half of a card first, then later cast the creature from exile
- Universes Beyond: This is the second major Tolkien collaboration after The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, and the first Tolkien set to be Standard-legal
The Adventure mechanic is perfectly suited for The Hobbit’s story — every creature has a journey to take before it arrives. Bilbo doesn’t just show up at the dragon’s lair. He earns it.
New Mechanics Debuting at Prerelease
Spoiler season at MagicCon Amsterdam revealed three brand new mechanics alongside returning Adventure. You’ll see all of these for the first time in your Prerelease Sealed pool.
Storied / Enduring Story
An ascend-style mechanic that permanently activates once you control three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas simultaneously. Once you have an Enduring Story, the bonus is yours for the rest of the game. Key Storied cards: Thorin Oakenshield, Bifur, Melodic Rider.
Recruit
Tied to Lake-town’s humans — draw a card, discard a card, and if the discarded card is a nonland, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. Key Recruit cards: The Queen of Dale, Bard, King of Dale.
Hone Counters
A new counter type on equipment — specifically Sting, Bilbo’s Sword. Hone counters increase the stat boost of the equipment over time.
Amass Goblins
Amass returns creating Goblin Army tokens — the fourth creature type to use the mechanic. Goblin Army tokens stack with existing army types. Key card: Bolg of the North.
For a deeper breakdown of every mechanic see our complete Hobbit MTG guide.
Confirmed Champions — Who to Watch at Prerelease
Spoiler season has confirmed an extraordinary number of legendary creatures. Here are the ones that will shape your Prerelease experience:
Smaug the Magnificent — The set’s #1 mythic. A Treasure-fueled Dragon that’s already the most-built Commander from the entire set with over 1,500 EDHREC decks registered.
Thranduil, the Elvenking — The biggest surprise of spoiler season. A Sultai (Black/Green/Blue) 5/6 Elf Noble who has all activated abilities of every Elf in your graveyard. The card elf Commander players have been waiting years for.
Bard, King of Dale — An Azorius mythic that doubles every card draw and doubles every token created. Two of the most powerful Commander effects on one card.
Thorin, Mountain-king — The flagship Dwarf tribal Commander. The Hobbit delivers the full Dwarven company to support him.
Thorin Oakenshield — Shows off the new Storied mechanic. While you have an Enduring Story, artifacts and creatures cost one less mana.
Bilbo, Thief in the Night — A two-mana mythic that recurs your best spells every combat.
Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane — A mono-red Adventure card. Gandalf appears in multiple versions across the set.
The Queen of Dale — A two-mana mythic that Recruits every time an opponent casts their first spell each turn.
Gollum, Riddle Master — Gollum makes his Hobbit-era card debut.
Fíli and Kíli, Joyous — Thorin’s nephews together on one card.
Elrond, Moon-Reader — A legendary Blue Elf that pairs beautifully with Thranduil.
Bard the Bowman — The uncommon version of Bard, showing his arc from hunter to king.
Bolg of the North, The Chief Warg, Tom Bert and William — Villain-side options for players who want to be the bad guys.
For the full Commander breakdown see our Best Hobbit MTG Cards for Commander guide.
The Chase Card: Gleaming Gold Smaug
If you’re cracking Collector Boosters at or after Prerelease, there’s one card everyone is chasing.
Only approximately 500 copies of the Gleaming Gold Smaug headliner card exist across all languages worldwide. It features a special foil treatment and appears exclusively in Collector Boosters. The card text always appears in English, regardless of what language booster you open.
Pulling one would be one of the rarest moments in modern Magic history.
Premium Treatments to Chase
Book Cover Cards — Several cards are reimagined as classic Tolkien book cover illustrations. Confirmed Book Cover cards include The Lonely Mountain, Gollum Riddle Master, Thranduil, and Bard. Surge foil versions are exclusive to Collector Boosters.
Dwarven Language Cards — Five cards printed in Tolkien’s own Khuzdul Dwarvish script including Arcane Signet, Mox Amber, and The Reaver Cleaver.
Dragon Hoard Frame — 25 cards with a special Smaug-inspired frame treatment.
HOC Box Toppers — Major reprints with Hobbit-era art including The One Ring, Orcish Bowmasters, Mox Amber, Rivendell, and The Shire. The One Ring reprint in particular is significant — existing copies from The Lord of the Rings set will likely see price pressure, making this the best time to acquire one.
