Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is the newest Universes Beyond set, releasing August 14, 2026. It follows Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and the company of Dwarves on their legendary journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain — brought to life through Magic cards for the first time.

What Is Universes Beyond?

Universes Beyond is Magic: The Gathering’s line of sets that take place outside the traditional Magic multiverse. Instead of Planeswalkers and fictional planes, Universes Beyond sets bring in characters, worlds, and stories from popular franchises.

Previous Universes Beyond sets have included The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy, and more. Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is the latest — and it’s the first Tolkien collaboration to be fully Standard-legal.

What’s the Story?

Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit follows the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel — Bilbo Baggins, an ordinary hobbit, is swept into an unexpected adventure by the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield.

Their goal: reclaim the Dwarven kingdom of Erebor — the Lonely Mountain — from the dragon Smaug, who has held it for generations.

The journey takes them through the Shire, the trolls’ camp, Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself. Along the way, Bilbo finds a certain golden ring in the dark — an object that will change the course of history forever.

The set captures this entire journey through Magic cards — key characters, locations, creatures, and moments all represented on card.

All the Mechanics — What’s New and What’s Returning

Adventure — Returning

The primary mechanic of The Hobbit returns from Throne of Eldraine (2019). Adventure cards are split cards — one half a creature, one half a spell. Cast the spell half first, exile the creature, then cast the creature from exile later.

Think of it like Bilbo’s journey. He doesn’t arrive at the Lonely Mountain on page one. He earns it — step by step, adventure by adventure. The spell is the journey. The creature is what arrives at the end of it.

Key Adventure cards: Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar’s Plot · Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane · Bilbo, Thief in the Night.

Storied / Enduring Story — New

An ascend-style mechanic. Once you control three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas simultaneously, you permanently gain an “Enduring Story.” Storied bonuses stay active for the rest of the game — once you have it, you have it forever.

The Hobbit is a set full of legendary creatures, artifacts, and sagas. Storied activates naturally and rewards the thematic style of play the set encourages.

Key Storied cards: Thorin Oakenshield (artifacts and creatures cost one less) · Bifur, Melodic Rider.

Recruit — New

Tied to Lake-town’s humans. When you Recruit, draw a card and discard a card — if the discarded card is a nonland, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. Mechanically similar to Connive from Streets of New Capenna, reframed as storytelling.

Key Recruit cards: The Queen of Dale · Bard, King of Dale (who doubles every Recruit token created).

Hone Counters — New

A new counter type appearing on Sting, Bilbo’s Sword. Hone counters increase the stat boost of the equipment over time — rewarding long games and patient play.

Amass Goblins — New Application

Amass returns creating Goblin Army tokens — the fourth creature type to use the mechanic alongside zombies, orcs, and slivers. Goblin Army tokens stack creature types with existing armies.

Key card: Bolg of the North.

Ferocious — Returning from Khans of Tarkir

Ferocious returns as a main-set mechanic for the first time since the Khans of Tarkir block. Rewards controlling creatures with 4 or more power. Appears in the Black/Green warg and wolf archetype.

Key card: The Chief Warg.

Key Characters in The Hobbit MTG Set

Spoiler season has confirmed an extraordinary number of legendary creatures. Here’s who’s been revealed so far — and more are arriving daily as preview season continues through July.

Bilbo Baggins — The unlikely hero. Appears at both mythic (Bilbo, Thief in the Night — a two-mana blue legend that recurs your best spells every combat) and uncommon (Bilbo, Luckwearer — an Adventure card for Halfling tribal strategies).

Gandalf — The wizard who sets everything in motion. Appears in multiple versions including Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane (mono-red Adventure card) and Gandalf, Party Guest (Jeskai, in the HOC Commander set).

Thorin Oakenshield — The Dwarf king in exile. Appears as Thorin, Mountain-king (the flagship mono-red Dwarf tribal Commander) and Thorin Oakenshield (Boros, showing off the new Storied mechanic).

Smaug — The dragon sleeping on a mountain of gold. Appears as Smaug the Magnificent (the set’s most-built Commander with over 1,500 EDHREC decks) and Smaug the Impenetrable (Rakdos, in the HOC set). The Gleaming Gold Smaug headliner card — approximately 500 copies worldwide — is the chase pull of the entire set.

Thranduil, the Elvenking — The biggest surprise of spoiler season. A Sultai (Black/Green/Blue) 5/6 Elf Noble who has all activated abilities of every Elf in your graveyard and draws two cards whenever a legendary Elf enters. The card the elf Commander community has been waiting years for.

Bard the Bowman / Bard, King of Dale — Two cards showing Bard’s arc from hunter to ruler. Bard, King of Dale is an Azorius mythic that doubles every card draw and doubles every token created — two of the most powerful Commander effects on one card.

The Queen of Dale — A two-mana mythic that Recruits every time an opponent casts their first spell each turn. Competitive potential in Standard, Pioneer, and Commander.

Gollum, Riddle Master — Gollum makes his Hobbit-era card debut, tying the two Tolkien collaborations together narratively.

Elrond, Moon-Reader — A legendary Blue Elf that bridges Green/Black elf strategies with the Blue/Green elves of The Lord of the Rings set.

Fíli and Kíli, Joyous — Thorin’s nephews together on one card. A Boros Dwarf legendary.

Bifur, Melodic Rider — A Storied Dwarf that puts +1/+1 counters on creatures while you have an Enduring Story.

Bolg of the North — A Black/Red Goblin general leading the Amass Goblins strategy.

The Chief Warg — Black/Green Wolf and Warg tribal with the Ferocious mechanic.

Tom, Bert, and William — The three trolls from the campfire scene on one card. The second most-built Commander from the entire set.

Prerelease Pack

Is The Hobbit MTG Good for Beginners?

Yes — and Prerelease is the ideal entry point.

Prerelease is a Sealed format event where everyone opens the same number of packs and builds a deck from what they pull. Nobody brings a pre-built competitive deck. Nobody has a collection advantage. You open six packs, build 40 cards, and play.

It’s one of the most level playing fields in all of Magic. Beginners and veterans sit down at the same tables and compete with the same tools. The Hobbit’s story is also familiar to many people who have never played Magic — which makes following along with the cards much easier than a set built in Magic’s own fictional universe.

How Is This Different From The Lord of the Rings Set?

Magic: The Gathering | The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth released in 2023 and was a massive success — it featured the most expensive Magic card ever printed (The One Ring, of which one copy existed in English).

The key differences with The Hobbit set:

Standard legal — Lord of the Rings was not Standard legal. The Hobbit is — the first Tolkien MTG set to qualify. Cards remain relevant for two full competitive seasons.

Different story — Lord of the Rings covered the Fellowship and the War of the Ring. The Hobbit covers Bilbo’s earlier journey — a completely different cast and era.

Different mechanics — Lord of the Rings used the Ring mechanic. The Hobbit uses Adventure plus three brand new mechanics: Storied, Recruit, and Hone counters.

Different chase card — Lord of the Rings had The One Ring (one copy in English). The Hobbit has Gleaming Gold Smaug (approximately 500 copies worldwide). Both are among the rarest cards in modern Magic history.

The One Ring reprint — The One Ring is reprinted in The Hobbit’s HOC Commander set with Hobbit-era art. Players who missed the original printing now have their best chance to acquire one. Existing copies from the Lord of the Rings set will likely see price pressure as a result.
