The Biggest Story: The One Ring Is Reprinted
The headline for collectors and finance-minded players: The One Ring is being reprinted in the HOC companion set with Hobbit-era art.
The original printing from The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth became one of the most valuable and most played cards in Commander — regularly trading for over $50. A reprint makes it newly accessible to players who missed it the first time and existing copies will likely see price pressure downward. If you’ve been waiting to get one, this is your moment.
The HOC set also reprints Orcish Bowmasters, Mox Amber, The Reaver Cleaver, Rivendell, The Shire, Delighted Halfling, Galadriel’s Dismissal, Reprieve, Call Forth the Tempest, Flame of Anor, Arcane Signet, and Treasure Vault — all with Hobbit-era art.
New Mechanics Revealed at MagicCon Amsterdam
The Amsterdam panel confirmed three brand new mechanics alongside returning Adventure.
Adventure — Returning
The set’s primary mechanic returns from Throne of Eldraine. Cast the spell half first, exile the creature, then cast it from exile later. Every Adventure card represents a multi-part moment from Bilbo’s journey.
Key Adventure cards: Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar’s Plot · Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane // Flameshape · My Precious // Allure of Power.
Storied / Enduring Story — New
Once you control three or more artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas simultaneously, you permanently gain an “Enduring Story.” Storied bonuses stay on for the rest of the game — once you have it, you have it forever.
Key cards: Thorin Oakenshield (cost reduction while Enduring Story is active) · Bifur, Melodic Rider.
Recruit — New
Draw a card, discard a card — if you discard a nonland, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. In token-doubling strategies every Recruit trigger creates two creatures.
Key cards: The Queen of Dale · Bard, King of Dale (doubles every token created).
Hone Counters — New
New counter type on Sting, Bilbo’s Sword that increases the equipment’s stat boost over time.
Amass Goblins — New Application
Amass returns creating Goblin Army tokens — the fourth creature type alongside zombies, orcs, and slivers.
Key card: Bolg of the North.
Ferocious — Returning from Khans of Tarkir
Rewards controlling creatures with 4 or more power. Appears in the Black/Green warg and wolf archetype.
Key card: The Chief Warg.
Songs as Sagas — New Application
Sagas in The Hobbit are themed around songs from Tolkien’s novel.
Key card: Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern.
