MTG The Hobbit Spoiler Season Recap — Every Reveal and Key Date

Spoiler season for Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit kicked off at MagicCon Amsterdam on July 18, 2026 and ran through daily partner previews to August 6, ahead of the August 7 & 8 Prerelease and the August 14 release. By the end, all 248 cards of the main set (HOB) and all 52 cards of the Hobbit Commander companion set (HOC) had been revealed.

The Biggest Story: The One Ring Is Reprinted

The headline for Commander players and collectors: The One Ring was reprinted in the Hobbit Commander (HOC) companion set with Hobbit-era art, alongside Orcish Bowmasters. Both are on Commander’s Game Changers list. HOC also carries reprints like Cavern-Hoard Dragon and Delighted Halfling, and the Dwarven Language cards (Arcane Signet, Treasure Vault, Dwarven Warriors, The Reaver Cleaver, and Mox Amber) are Collector Booster exclusives.

New Mechanics Revealed

Adventure — returning from Throne of Eldraine. Cast the spell half first, then cast the creature later from exile. Key Adventure cards: Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar’s Plot, Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane // Flameshape, and My Precious // Allure of Power.

Storied / Enduring Story — new. Once you control enough artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas, you permanently gain an Enduring Story. Storied cards include Thorin Oakenshield and Bifur, Melodic Rider.

Recruit — new. Draw a card, discard a card, and if you discard a nonland, create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. Key cards: The Queen of Dale and Bard, King of Dale.

Hone counters — new. A counter type on Sting, Bilbo’s Sword that increases the equipment’s stat boost over time.

Amass Goblins — new application. Amass creating Goblin Army tokens, with Bolg of the North among the cards that care.

Ferocious — returning from Khans of Tarkir. Rewards controlling creatures with 4 or more power, in the Black/Green warg and wolf archetype with The Chief Warg.

Songs as Sagas — new application. Sagas themed around songs from Tolkien’s novel, such as Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern.

Standout Reveals

Thranduil, the Elvenking — The biggest surprise of spoiler season: a Sultai (Black/Green/Blue) 5/6 Elf Noble that became the most-built Commander of the set on EDHREC, with 5,488 decks as of August 23.

Bard, King of Dale — An Azorius mythic that doubles card draw and token creation, the Recruit and token engine of the set.

Bilbo, Thief in the Night — A two-mana blue mythic that Izzet and Jeskai Standard decks took to quickly.

Smaug the Magnificent — The red Dragon mythic and the card behind the Gleaming Gold Smaug headliner, with approximately 500 copies printed.

The Queen of Dale — A two-mana white mythic that Recruits when an opponent casts their first noncreature spell each turn.

Gleaming Splendor — A white mythic enchantment that draws cards and makes Treasure, and the early favorite among collectors.

More highlights: Radagast of Rhosgobel, Beorn the Fierce, Elrond, Moon-Reader, Gollum, Riddle Master, Azog, Moria’s Ruin, The Master of Lake-town ({1}{B}{B}, mono-black), The Great Goblin, and Tom, Bert, and William in the main set, plus Mithril Coat, Bilbo’s Ring, Sauron, the Dark Lord, Witch-king, Bringer of Ruin, Saruman of Many Colors, Tom Bombadil, and Aragorn and Arwen, Wed in HOC.

Scene Boxes

The two Hobbit Scene Boxes were revealed during spoiler season. Each contains three Play Boosters, six Traditional Foil Borderless scene cards, six art-only cards, and a paper easel.
