What Is Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit?

Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is a Universes Beyond set that follows Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and the company of Dwarves on their legendary journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, brought to life through Magic cards. It released worldwide on August 14, 2026, after a MagicCon Amsterdam spoiler season that began July 18.

It is the second major Tolkien set in Magic after The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, and it is Standard-legal. Only cards from the main set (code HOB) are Standard-legal. The companion Hobbit Commander set (HOC) is eternal-legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage but not Standard. Wizards has said Standard will not rotate in fall 2026.

The headline mechanic is Adventure: split cards where you cast the spell half first and the creature later. The set also introduced Storied, Recruit, Hone counters, and Goblin Army tokens through Amass.

Prerelease Recap

The Hobbit Prerelease at Skillshotz Gaming ran Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8, 2026. It was a Sealed format event: each player opened a Prerelease Pack of six Play Boosters, built a 40-card deck from what they pulled, and played. Prerelease kits were in-person only; we do not ship them.

Skillshotz Gaming holds WPN Tier 6 status — the highest tier in the Wizards Play Network, formerly known as WPN Premium. During The Hobbit’s Commander Party events, WPN Tier 6 stores received the traditional foil version of the Bilbo, Luckwearer promo card.

Play Boosters — The standard booster. 14 cards per pack, including 1–3 rares, a land, and a traditional foil. Boxes include 30 packs plus a Box Topper.

Collector Boosters — The premium product, with Surge Foils, Book Cover Cards, Dwarven Language Cards, Dragon Hoard frames, and the ultra-rare Gleaming Gold Smaug. Boxes include 12 packs plus a Box Topper.

The Hobbit Bundle — 9 Play Boosters, exclusive foil full-art lands, a foil alt-art card, a storage box, and an oversized Spindown.

The Hobbit Gift Bundle — Everything in the Bundle plus surge foil lands, a foil storage box, and 1 Collector Booster. It released September 4.

The Hobbit Commander (HOC) — A separate 52-card, eternal-legal companion set built for Commander, headlined by reprints of The One Ring (with Hobbit-era art) and Orcish Bowmasters.

Collector Boosters — The Premium Experience

Collector Boosters are loaded with Surge Foils, Book Cover Cards reimagined as classic Tolkien paperback illustrations, Dwarven Language Cards printed in Tolkien’s Khuzdul script, Dragon Hoard frame cards, and traditional foils at every rarity.

Then there’s Gleaming Gold Smaug, the headliner: approximately 500 copies exist worldwide, appearing exclusively in Collector Boosters, with card text always in English regardless of the booster’s language.

Scene Boxes — Crack the Plates & Treasures of Smaug

Two premium Scene Boxes recreate iconic moments from the story through connected panoramic cards. Each contains six Traditional Foil Borderless Scene cards, six art-only cards, three Play Boosters, and a display easel. Scene cards follow HOC legality, so they are eternal-legal only.

Crack the Plates recreates the unexpected dinner party at Bag End. Its cards are Gandalf, Party Guest; Fíli and Kíli, Joyous; Ori, Plate Stacker; Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator; Bag End Banquet; and Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk.

Treasures of Smaug captures Bilbo in Smaug’s hoard. Its cards are Smaug the Impenetrable, Dragon-Cursed Halls, Dragon’s Desire, Necklace of Girion, Long-Lost Lances, and Bilbo’s Burglaring.

The Hobbit in Standard

Because the main set is Standard-legal, The Hobbit landed in a format that had just been reshaped by Wizards’ August 10 Banned and Restricted announcement. The early metagame data from official coverage describes a remarkably diverse field, with established decks surviving the bans alongside new strategies built around Hobbit cards. Wizards’ own Metagame Mentor coverage also noted strong results for Mono-Green Landfall.

Best Hobbit MTG Cards for Commander

Commander is the most popular Magic format in the world, and The Hobbit was built for it across both the main set and the HOC companion. HOC headliners include Aragorn and Arwen, Wed; Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk; Smaug the Impenetrable; Sauron, the Dark Lord; Witch-king, Bringer of Ruin; Saruman of Many Colors; and Tom Bombadil, plus the reprints of The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters. Both are Game Changers, so Commander players should check them against their bracket conversations.

Adventure suits Commander’s long games well, since every Adventure card is effectively two cards in one.
