Best Magic: The Gathering Hobbit MTG Cards for Commander

Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit has been out since August 14, 2026, and Commander players have spoken: it’s one of the most popular sets for the format in years. EDHREC counts sixty-three new commanders across the main set and the Hobbit Commander (HOC) companion set, and elves, dwarves, dragons, goblins, and trolls all have real homes.

This guide covers the most-built Hobbit commanders, the mechanics that matter in Commander, the key reprints, and the best cards for the 99. Last updated: October 25, 2026.

These are the five most-built Hobbit commanders on EDHREC as of August 23, 2026, according to Wargamer’s report on the data:

Rank Commander Decks Set
1 Thranduil, the Elvenking 5,488 HOB
2 Smaug the Impenetrable 3,902 HOC
3 Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk 3,887 HOC
4 Beorn the Fierce 3,391 HOB
5 The Great Goblin 3,347 HOB

Deck counts grow daily, so check EDHREC for live numbers. The ranking itself, with Thranduil well ahead, is the story of the set.

New Mechanics — What Every Commander Player Needs to Know

Storied / Enduring Story

Storied is an ascend-style mechanic. Once you control enough artifacts, legendary permanents, and/or Sagas, you gain an Enduring Story, a permanent bonus that stays active for the rest of the game. Commander decks are naturally full of legendary permanents and artifacts, so Storied is easy to turn on. Storied cards include Thorin Oakenshield and Bifur, Melodic Rider.

Recruit

Recruit is tied to Lake-town’s humans. When you Recruit, you draw a card and discard a card, and if the discarded card is a nonland, you create a 1/1 white Human Soldier token. It’s mechanically similar to Connive, and in token-doubling decks every Recruit trigger becomes two creatures. Key Recruit cards: The Queen of Dale, which triggers when an opponent casts their first noncreature spell each turn, and Bard, King of Dale.

Adventure (Returning)

Adventure returns from Throne of Eldraine as the set’s primary mechanic. Cast the spell half first, then cast the creature later from exile. In a 100-card singleton format, two cards in one slot is real flexibility.

The Best Commanders from The Hobbit

Thranduil, the Elvenking — The Most-Built Commander in the Set

Colors: Sultai (Black/Green/Blue) — {2}{B}{G}{U} · Type: Legendary Elf Noble, 5/6

For five mana, Thranduil has all the activated abilities of the Elves in your graveyard, and whenever another legendary Elf enters under your control you draw two cards, then discard one. Because he’s three colors, his deck can use the green/black elves from planes like Lorwyn, Kaldheim, and Ravnica as well as the blue/green elves of Middle-earth. The draw-and-discard also pushes you toward a graveyard-based plan. He’s the elf Commander payoff many players had been waiting years for. The set also has Thranduil, Sindarin Liege (an uncommon) and the HOC Thranduil the Strategist.

Smaug the Impenetrable — Rakdos Dragons (HOC)

Colors: Rakdos (Black/Red) — {5}{B}{R} · Type: Legendary Dragon

The second most-built commander in the set and the Dragon tribal option with black mana. Smaug the Impenetrable is one of the six cards in the Treasures of Smaug Scene Box.

Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk — Boros Dwarves (HOC)

Colors: Boros (Red/White) — {3}{R}{W} · Type: Legendary Dwarf Noble

Third on the list and the Dwarf tribal face of the Crack the Plates Scene Box. Dwarf tribal now has genuine depth. EDHREC’s average Bifur, Melodic Rider list runs a long run of Dwarves including Balin, Loremaster, Dáin Ironfoot, Dwalin, Weaponmaster, Fíli the Pathfinder, Kíli the Resourceful, and Glóin the Mighty.

Beorn the Fierce — Mono-Green Bears

Colors: Green — {3}{G}{G} · Type: Legendary Bear Shapeshifter Warrior · Rarity: Mythic

Fourth most-built, and the best of the mono-colored commanders in the set. Beorn’s Adventure-flavored siblings (Beorn, Reluctant Host // Till and Tend) give Bear and Shapeshifter strategies support.

The Great Goblin — Goblin Tribal

Colors: Black/Red hybrid — {1}{B/R}{B/R} · Type: Legendary Goblin Noble

Fifth most-built, and the Goblin tribal payoff. On EDHREC, its decks lean on Krenko, Mob Boss and Boggart Mischief, along with set cards like Bothersome Noisemaker. Bolg of the North, Azog, Moria’s Ruin, and the HOC Great Goblin, Foul-Hearted and Bolg, Erebor’s Reckoning give Goblins plenty of company, and Amass Goblins supports the tokens.

Bard, King of Dale — The Commander Staple

Colors: Azorius (White/Blue) — {4}{W}{U} · Type: Legendary Human Noble Archer, 3/5 with Reach and Vigilance · Rarity: Mythic

A draw doubler and a token doubler in one card. If you would draw a card except the first in each of your draw steps, you draw two instead, and if one or more tokens would be created under your control, twice that many are created. Bard works in Azorius decks whether you want card advantage or a swarming board, and it’s the natural partner for The Queen of Dale’s Recruit triggers. Bard, Heir of Girion in HOC and the uncommon Bard the Bowman round out the family.

Smaug the Magnificent — Red Dragons

Colors: Red — {2}{R}{R} · Type: Legendary Dragon · Rarity: Mythic

The Standard-legal Smaug. A Treasure-fueled Dragon at the head of a red deck, and the card behind the Gleaming Gold Smaug headliner, with approximately 500 copies worldwide exclusive to Collector Boosters.

Thorin, Mountain-king — Mono-Red Dwarves

Colors: Red — {3}{R} · Type: Legendary Dwarf Noble · Rarity: Mythic

The mono-red alternative for Dwarf tribal. Thorin Oakenshield (Red/White) shows off Storied, and HOC adds Thorin, Company’s Leader.

Bilbo, Thief in the Night — The Blue Value Engine

Colors: Blue — {1}{U} · Type: Legendary Halfling Rogue · Rarity: Mythic

A two-mana commander that reduces the cost of spells cast from outside your hand and lets you cast artifacts, instants, and sorceries from your graveyard when he attacks. It’s a natural fit for spellslinger and artifact decks. The set has more Bilbos (Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar’s Plot, Bilbo Baggins, Burglar // Take a Glance, and in HOC Bilbo, Fellow Conspirator and Bilbo, Unexpected Adventurer), giving Halfling tribal a real identity.

Tom, Bert, and William — The Troll Trio

Colors: Black/Green — {3}{B}{G} · Type: Legendary Troll

The three trolls from the campfire scene on one card, and a natural home for large green creatures.

The Chief Warg and Chief of the Wilds — Wolf Tribal

Colors: Black/Green · The Chief Warg ({2}{B}{G}) is in the main set, and Chief of the Wilds ({2}{B}{G}) is in HOC.

Wolf tribal got a real archetype. On EDHREC, Chief of the Wilds decks run Head of the Hunt and Chief Warg’s Company in nearly every list.

Gandalf — Three Versions

Gandalf, Goblins’ Bane // Flameshape — A mono-red Adventure mythic for the Gandalf fantasy without extra colors. Gandalf, Party Guest — The Jeskai (White/Blue/Red) HOC Gandalf from the Crack the Plates Scene Box. Gandalf, Shadow’s Foe — A seven-mana blue HOC mythic.

More Commanders to Look At

Elrond, Moon-Reader — A mono-blue legendary Elf that works as a payoff in Thranduil decks. Fíli and Kíli, Joyous — A mono-red Dwarf legend from the Scene Box. Gollum, Riddle Master — A black commander built around riddles and choices. Sauron, the Dark Lord, Sauron, the Lidless Eye, and Witch-king, Bringer of Ruin — The villains of HOC. Saruman of Many Colors and Tom Bombadil — The wizard and the five-color saga commander. Aragorn and Arwen, Wed — A Selesnya (Green/White) HOC commander.

Key Reprints and Game Changers in HOC

The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters are both reprinted in HOC and are both on Commander’s Game Changers list. If your pod uses brackets, keep them in mind.

Cavern-Hoard Dragon and Delighted Halfling are also reprinted with Hobbit-era art. Mox Amber, Arcane Signet, Treasure Vault, The Reaver Cleaver, and Dwarven Warriors appear as Dwarven Language cards in Collector Boosters. HOC also reprints the legendary lands Rivendell, The Shire, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul, and Mount Doom.

Key Non-Commander Cards for the 99

  • The Arkenstone // Seek the Heart — The adventure half tutors a legendary creature, and the Arkenstone gives you card advantage afterward.
  • Radagast of Rhosgobel — Reduces the cost of creature spells and gives creatures flash, and it shows up in Tom, Bert, and William decks.
  • Sting, Bilbo’s Sword — A legendary equipment with Hone counters that increase its stat boost over time.
  • The Lonely Mountain — The legendary Mountain land with a Book Cover art treatment.
  • Mithril Coat and Bilbo’s Ring — Legendary equipment from HOC.
  • Part in Friendship — A green enchantment that turns up in Tom, Bert, and William decks on EDHREC.
  • Desolation of Smaug — A red sorcery that thematically suits Dragon decks.
  • Settle the Wreckage — A white instant that exiles attacking creatures, in the 99 of many white-based control decks.

Book Cover Treatment — The Collector’s Target

Several cards have a premium Book Cover treatment reimagining them as classic Tolkien paperback illustrations, including The Lonely Mountain, Gollum, Riddle Master, Thranduil, the Elvenking, and Bard, King of Dale. Surge foil versions appear only in Collector Boosters. They’re prime targets for Commander players who want a deck that looks as good as it plays.
