What Is Karabast? The Complete Guide to Playing Star Wars Unlimited Online Free

If you’ve been searching for a way to play Star Wars Unlimited online without paying for anything — Karabast is the answer.

Karabast is a free, open-source, fan-made Star Wars Unlimited simulator built specifically to help players research decks and strategies in support of in-person play. It runs in your browser, requires no download, and has no paywalls. Every card through the current set is available to use. Playriftbound

This guide covers everything you need to know — what Karabast is, how to get started, how to find opponents, and how to use it to improve before your next event at Skillshotz Gaming.

What Is Karabast?

Karabast is a browser-based Star Wars Unlimited simulator created by the community, for the community. It is an educational tool meant to facilitate researching decks and strategies in support of in-person play — and it is completely free. Payment is not required to access any functionality. Playriftbound

The name comes from a Star Wars exclamation — Hera Syndulla’s go-to frustrated outburst in Star Wars Rebels. If you’ve ever misplayed into a bad situation at your local game store, you’ll understand why the community chose that name.

Karabast is not affiliated with Disney or Fantasy Flight Games. Star Wars characters, cards, logos, and art are property of Disney and/or Fantasy Flight Games. It exists in a similar space to other fan-built TCG simulators — a tool for learning and testing, not a replacement for buying and playing the physical game. Playriftbound

What Can You Do on Karabast?

Play against real opponents
You’re able to create a lobby and play against other players. You can also spectate any of the public games occurring, letting you kick back and watch others play. Watching others play helps you grow as a player, identifying potential mistakes in your own gameplay. Piltover Archive

Test any deck for free
Every card in Star Wars Unlimited is available on Karabast at no cost. Want to test a Vader deck before buying the singles? Build it on Karabast and play 10 games first. Want to try a new leader before committing to the cards? Same thing.

Import from SWUDB
Deck lists built on SWUDB.com can be imported directly into Karabast for online play. SWUDB is the most comprehensive SWU card database and deck builder — build your list there, grab the import link, and paste it into Karabast. Playriftbound

Track your stats
Karabast now includes deck stat tracking — a deckbuilder particularly focused on tracking your game stats over time to help you train for upcoming organized play tournaments or even game night at your local game store. Playriftbound

Spectate games
One of Karabast’s most underrated features — you can watch other players’ live games. Seeing how better players sequence their turns, manage resources, and make decisions is one of the fastest ways to improve.

How to Get Started on Karabast

Getting into Karabast is straightforward:

Step 1 — Go to karabast.net
The platform runs in your browser. No download required. Works on Chrome, Firefox, and most modern browsers.

Step 2 — Create a free account
Log in to access matchmaking and see open matches. You need to log in to use matchmaking and see open matches. Registration is free. Playriftbound

Step 3 — Build or import a deck
You can build a deck directly in Karabast or import one from SWUDB.com — the community’s preferred deck builder. If you’re new to deck building, SWUDB has thousands of community-submitted decks to browse and test.

Step 4 — Find a game
Create a lobby or join an open match. You can also find opponents through the Karabast Discord where the community organizes games, runs casual tournaments, and discusses the platform.

Step 5 — Play
The interface simulates the physical game — cards, resources, battlefield, the works. If you know how to play Star Wars Unlimited in person, Karabast will feel immediately familiar.

Karabast vs Force Table — What’s the Difference?

Players searching for SWU online often encounter both Karabast and Force Table. Here’s how they compare:

Karabast

  • Free — no subscription required for any feature
  • Browser-based — no download
  • Open source — community built and maintained
  • Supports Quick Match, live lobbies, and spectating
  • Updated through A Lawless Time as of June 2026 Playriftbound
  • Best for: testing decks, casual games, learning the game

Force Table

  • Quick Match is free — Sealed and Draft require a Patreon subscription from $5/month
  • Also browser-based
  • Has launched a Twin Suns 1v1 mode, making it one of the only browser-based platforms currently supporting the multiplayer format in head-to-head Playriftbound
  • Best for: Sealed and Draft practice, Twin Suns format

Both are excellent tools and most serious SWU players use both. Karabast for Premier format deck testing, Force Table for Sealed and Draft practice.

Protect the Pod — For Sealed and Draft Players

If you specifically want to practice Sealed and Draft formats, there’s a third tool worth knowing about.

Protect the Pod is a limited format simulator that works alongside Karabast. It supports both solo and live draft formats, lets you build from any set’s card pool, and connects directly to Karabast for the actual gameplay portion. It’s actively developed, well-maintained, and free to use. If you play in any local sealed or draft events, practicing here first is a smart move. Playriftbound

Skillshotz Gaming runs regular Draft and Sealed events — practicing your limited build skills on Protect the Pod before showing up is the kind of preparation that wins games.

How to Use Karabast to Get Better at Skillshotz Events

Karabast isn’t just for playing online — it’s a training tool for your real-world game. Here’s how to use it effectively:

Test before you buy
Before spending money on singles for a new deck, test the list on Karabast. Play 10–15 games and see how it feels. Find the weak cards, identify what’s missing, and refine the list before you invest.

Practice specific matchups
If you know you’re playing against a particular leader at Friday Night Magic or a Star Wars Unlimited event at Skillshotz, hop on Karabast and run the matchup repeatedly. Understanding what your opponent’s deck wants to do and how to disrupt it makes a massive difference.

Learn new cards before prereleases
When a new set drops, Karabast updates quickly with the new cards. Before heading to a Prerelease Sealed event, familiarize yourself with what’s in the set — what the new keywords do, what the chase cards look like in play, and which synergies you want to build around in Sealed.

Watch better players
Use the spectate feature. Find games between experienced players and watch how they play. You’ll pick up sequencing, resource management, and decision-making that’s hard to learn any other way.

The Limits of Online Play — Why Physical Still Wins

Karabast is an exceptional tool. But it has limits worth understanding.

Direct competition through the form of automated tournaments or rankings will not be added to Karabast — it’s explicitly a learning and testing tool, not a competitive platform. If you want ranked ladder play you’ll need to look elsewhere. Playriftbound

More importantly — nothing replaces playing in person. Reading the table, managing the physical cards, responding to a real opponent across from you, playing in a venue with real stakes and real community — that’s what Karabast is preparing you for.

Skillshotz Gaming in Deerfield Beach runs Star Wars Unlimited events every week. Friday Night Magic, Draft nights, Sealed events, casual open play. Once you’ve tested your deck on Karabast and you’re confident in the list — bring it to Skillshotz and find out how it runs against South Florida’s best players.
