What Is Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit? Everything You Need to Know
Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Middle-earth — and this time, it’s The Hobbit.
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is the newest Universes Beyond set, releasing August 14, 2026. It follows Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and the company of Dwarves on their legendary journey from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain — brought to life through Magic cards for the first time.
Whether you’re a longtime Magic player curious about the new set, a Tolkien fan wondering if this is the right entry point into the game, or someone who played The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set and wants to know what’s next — this guide covers everything.
What Is Universes Beyond?
Universes Beyond is Magic: The Gathering’s line of sets that take place outside the traditional Magic multiverse. Instead of Planeswalkers and fictional planes, Universes Beyond sets bring in characters, worlds, and stories from popular franchises.
Previous Universes Beyond sets have included The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy, and more. Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is the latest — and it’s the first Tolkien collaboration to be fully Standard-legal.
What’s the Story?
Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit follows the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel — Bilbo Baggins, an ordinary hobbit, is swept into an unexpected adventure by the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen Dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield.
Their goal: reclaim the Dwarven kingdom of Erebor — the Lonely Mountain — from the dragon Smaug, who has held it for generations.
The journey takes them through the Shire, the trolls’ camp, Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself. Along the way, Bilbo finds a certain golden ring in the dark — an object that will change the course of history forever.
The set captures this entire journey through Magic cards — key characters, locations, creatures, and moments all represented on card.

What Is the Adventure Mechanic?
The primary mechanic of Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit is Adventure — and it fits the story perfectly.
Adventure cards are split cards. One half is a creature. The other half is a spell — an instant or sorcery. When you play an Adventure card, you can choose to cast the spell half first. After it resolves, the creature goes into exile — and you can cast it from exile later.
Think of it like Bilbo’s journey. He doesn’t arrive at the Lonely Mountain on page one. He earns it — step by step, adventure by adventure. Every Adventure card tells a similar story. The spell is the journey. The creature is what arrives at the end of it.
Adventure was first introduced in Throne of Eldraine (2019) and was popular enough to bring back here. It rewards patient, strategic play and creates interesting decisions about when to cast each half.
Key Characters in The Hobbit MTG Set
Bilbo Baggins — The unlikely hero. A hobbit who wants nothing more than his armchair and his pipe — until Gandalf shows up at his door.
Gandalf — The wizard who sets everything in motion. One of the most powerful characters in Tolkien’s world and a natural fit for a legendary Magic card.
Thorin Oakenshield — The Dwarf king in exile. Proud, determined, and carrying the weight of his people’s lost home. Thorin is the emotional center of The Hobbit and will almost certainly be a powerful commander card.
Smaug — The dragon sleeping on a mountain of gold. The greatest threat in the story and the most anticipated card in the set. The Gleaming Gold Smaug headliner card is one of the rarest Magic cards ever printed — approximately 500 copies exist worldwide.
Gollum — Already appeared in The Lord of the Rings set. His appearance in The Hobbit set ties the two collaborations together narratively.

Is The Hobbit MTG Good for Beginners?
Yes — and Prerelease is the ideal entry point.
Prerelease is a Sealed format event where everyone opens the same number of packs and builds a deck from what they pull. Nobody brings a pre-built competitive deck. Nobody has a collection advantage. You open six packs, build 40 cards, and play.
It’s one of the most level playing fields in all of Magic. Beginners and veterans sit down at the same tables and compete with the same tools. The Hobbit’s story is also familiar to many people who have never played Magic — which makes following along with the cards much easier than a set built in Magic’s own fictional universe.
If you’ve been thinking about trying Magic, a Prerelease is the best first event you can attend. Skillshotz Gaming runs beginner-friendly Prerelease events — our staff and community are welcoming to new players.
How Is This Different From The Lord of the Rings Set?
Magic: The Gathering | The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth released in 2023 and was a massive success — it featured the most expensive Magic card ever printed (The One Ring, of which one copy existed in English).
The key differences with The Hobbit set:
- Standard legal — Lord of the Rings was not Standard legal. The Hobbit is. That means it’s playable in the most popular competitive format and will remain relevant for two years.
- Different story — Lord of the Rings covered the Fellowship and the War of the Ring. The Hobbit covers Bilbo’s earlier journey — a completely different cast of characters and events.
- Adventure mechanic — Lord of the Rings used the Ring mechanic. The Hobbit uses Adventure.
- Different chase card — Lord of the Rings had The One Ring. The Hobbit has Gleaming Gold Smaug — approximately 500 copies worldwide across all languages.
