Star Wars Unlimited Judge Program Guide (2026)
The Star Wars Unlimited Judge Program is the official pathway for players who want to give back to the competitive community by overseeing tournaments, resolving disputes, and helping organized play run smoothly. Whether you’re interested in judging local store events or working your way up to Galactic Championship-level events, here’s everything you need to know about how the program works in 2026.
What Is the Star Wars Unlimited Judge Program?
The Judge Program is run by Cascade Games in partnership with Fantasy Flight Games. Cascade is a gaming industry organization with over thirty years of experience managing judge programs and organized play infrastructure for major TCGs. They handle all training, certification, and event placement for Star Wars Unlimited judges worldwide.
The program is free to join. Anyone over the age of 16 can sign up, complete the training, and work toward certification. The official hub for everything judge-related is Nexus — where you’ll find lessons, exams, resources, and event listings.
Why Become a Star Wars Unlimited Judge?
Judging is one of the most direct ways to build leadership within the SWU community. Beyond the personal satisfaction of contributing to a fair and well-run event, there are some concrete benefits:
Community leadership — judges are trusted figures at local and regional events, often becoming the go-to resource for newer players learning the game.
Professional development — the skills you build as a judge translate directly to real-world event management, communication, and conflict resolution.
Exclusive judge promos — certified judges receive access to limited-edition promotional cards in unique frames not available through any other channel. These are highly collectible and only distributed through the judge program.
Access to premier events — higher-level judges work Planetary Qualifiers, Regional Championships, Sector Qualifiers, and Galactic Championship events.
Networking — the official Judge Program Discord connects you with a global community of judges, tournament organizers, and FFG staff.
How to Get Started
Step 1 — Create a Nexus Account
Sign up at nexus.cascadegames.com. This is free and takes a few minutes. Your Nexus profile is how tournament organizers find and contact you for event staffing.
Step 2 — Review the Judge Levels
Familiarize yourself with the certification structure before diving into lessons. The full breakdown is at the Judge Levels page on Nexus.
Step 3 — Complete Online Lessons
Nexus hosts a growing library of lessons covering rules, policy, tournament logistics, and gameplay knowledge. The program now includes nearly 500 questions across seven exams, with content available in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Step 4 — Attend Local Events
After completing the foundational lessons, start volunteering at local game store events. Hands-on experience is required to advance through certification levels and is where you’ll develop the real-world skills that written exams can’t fully prepare you for.
Step 5 — Take the Certification Exam
When you’re ready, take the appropriate exam for your target level on Nexus. Once you pass, your certification updates automatically and your Discord role in the Judge Community server updates as well.
Judge Certification Levels
The program starts with an optional Apprentice rank and progresses through five certified levels. Each level builds on the previous one, increasing expectations for rules knowledge, policy understanding, and tournament operations expertise.
Apprentice
Optional entry rank. Covers basic game concepts, card anatomy, game structure, action timing, and how to teach the game to new players. No policy or tournament operations knowledge required. Approximately six lessons to complete.
Level 1
The foundation of the certified judge pool. L1 judges form the majority of working judges at local and store-level events. They handle rules inquiries, issue basic penalties, and support tournament organizers at casual and competitive events.
Level 2
Experienced judges capable of leading mid-sized events, mentoring L1 judges, and handling complex rulings. Required for staffing larger competitive events.
Level 3
Advanced judges who manage Regional and Sector-level events and provide mentorship and leadership across the judge community.
Level 4 and Level 5
The highest certification tiers, reserved for judges operating at the Galactic Championship level with deep expertise in tournament operations, appeals, and judge program leadership.
For the full requirements at each level, see the official levels page on Nexus.
Judge Responsibilities
Judges are ambassadors for the game, not just rule enforcers. In practice that means:
Answering rules and card interaction questions during events — accurately and clearly, without showing favoritism. Issuing penalties and warnings consistently in line with the official tournament regulations. Keeping events on schedule and managing time between rounds. Collaborating with tournament organizers to make sure the event runs smoothly. Creating a welcoming environment for players of all skill levels, especially newer players who may feel intimidated at their first competitive event.
The Star Wars Unlimited Judge Tool
A community-built resource worth knowing about: the Star Wars Unlimited Judge Tool. It combines card data, official rulings, errata, and Cascade’s key documents into a single interface designed for use at events — including offline use when internet access is unreliable. If you’re going to be judging competitive events, having this loaded on your device is a smart move.
Tips for Aspiring Judges
Know the Comprehensive Rules
A strong foundation in how the game actually works makes everything else easier. The official rules document is linked in the Nexus Resources page.
Practice Explaining Rulings Clearly
The ability to communicate a decision in plain language — especially to a frustrated player — is one of the most important skills you’ll develop as a judge.
Volunteer Early and Often
Working local store events before you’re certified is a great way to get comfortable with tournament flow and build relationships with tournament organizers in your area.
Stay Current with Suspensions and Rulings
Cards get suspended, errata’d, and updated. Judges are expected to know the current legal card pool. The suspended card list is maintained at SWU Competitive Hub. For current rotation and what sets are Premier-legal, see our Star Wars Unlimited rotation guide.
Join the Judge Discord
It’s the fastest way to ask questions, get feedback on rulings calls, and connect with the broader judge community.
