One Piece TCG OP-16 The Time of Battle: Complete Set Guide (2026)

The Time of Battle is themed around One Piece’s Summit War Saga, bringing the Impel Down and Marineford arcs — and some of the most emotionally significant moments in the entire series — to the One Piece Card Game. OP-16 released in the West on June 12, 2026, and it’s already shaking up the competitive meta harder than anything since rotation. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is OP-16 The Time of Battle?

The Time of Battle is the 16th main booster set for the One Piece Card Game, published by Bandai. The Paramount War — known in the manga as the Summit War of Marineford — is the climax of the pre-timeskip storyline and one of the most emotionally significant arcs in the series. Whitebeard’s final stand, Ace’s fate, Luffy’s breakdown after Marineford — this is the arc that made a lot of people care about One Piece as more than just a kids’ show.

Bandai has delivered a set that matches the scope of that story.

Release date: June 12, 2026 (English) · May 30, 2026 (Japanese)
Set code: OP-16
Pack contents: 12 cards per pack · 24 packs per box
Standard legal: Yes — OP-16 is fully legal in the current Standard format (OP-09 through OP-16)

The Six New Leaders in OP-16

The Time of Battle introduces six new Leaders: Red Portgas D. Ace, Blue Green Monkey D. Luffy, Blue Buggy, Purple Sengoku, Black Yamato, and Black Yellow Marshall D. Teach. Each one offers a genuinely distinct strategic direction — this is one of the more diverse leader lineups the game has seen in a single set.

Red Portgas D. Ace

Ace is the emotional centerpiece of the Marineford arc and one of the most anticipated leaders in the game’s history. His playstyle revolves around familial bonds — using the Whitebeard Pirates as the anchor for a fast-paced aggressive strategy that burns through opponent’s Life cards. Ace wants Edward Newgate (OP16-003) to anchor the board so the family stays in the fight. A Secret Rare version of Ace is one of the chase cards of the set.

Blue Green Monkey D. Luffy

Blue Green Luffy has 4 Life and the ability to restand 2 of his rested DON!! cards. His Impel Down prison break theme rewards swarming the board with low-cost characters and using DON!! acceleration to power through opponents. One of the early frontrunners in the competitive meta.

Blue Buggy

Captain Buggy leads the prisoners of Impel Down in a surprisingly competitive archetype. His strategy relies on overwhelming opponents with sheer numbers — a swarm deck that generates board presence faster than most opponents can answer. Buggy introduces one of the most unusual mechanics in the game’s history: you can run as many copies of the Prisoner of Impel Down card as you want, breaking the standard four-copy limit entirely.

Purple Sengoku

The Fleet Admiral commands the Three Admirals — Akainu, Aokiji, and Kizaru — in a high-cost control deck built around powerful individual threats. Sengoku leans on his Admirals, with the seven-cost Sakazuki (OP16-065) sitting at the top of the curve as the deck’s marquee threat.

Black Yamato

Yamato’s engine is a graveyard loop — trashing itself to cheat the heavy-hitting eight-cost Yamato (OP16-096) into play and grinding opponents down from the discard pile. A patient, methodical deck that rewards planning over aggression.

Black Yellow Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)

Blackbeard pairs naturally with Shiryu (OP16-108) to round out a crew built on disruption. A Secret Rare version of Blackbeard is among the most sought-after pulls in the set alongside Ace.

The Prisoner of Impel Down — A Rule-Breaking Card

One of the most talked-about cards in OP-16 is the Prisoner of Impel Down. Where nearly every card in the game is capped at four copies per deck, this one tears up the rulebook — you can run as many copies as you want. This is unprecedented in the One Piece Card Game and opens up entirely new deck-building approaches centered around flooding the board with prisoner characters alongside Buggy or Blue Green Luffy.

Manga Rares in OP-16

Every mainline One Piece TCG set includes Manga Rare cards — the rarest and most valuable cards in the game, featuring iconic manga panel artwork from Eiichiro Oda’s original art. OP-16 includes three Manga Rares.

The Marineford arc features some of the most iconic panels in manga history — Ace’s death, Whitebeard’s final stand, Luffy’s grief. If those moments translate into Manga Rare artwork the way collectors hope, OP-16’s Manga Rares could rival the OP-13 Ace Manga Rare which hit $4,900 in December 2025.

What to Buy in OP-16

For Competitive Players

Buy singles rather than cracking packs. The competitive meta is still developing — this is one of the best times to get in early before optimal builds are locked in and key singles spike in price.

Early meta standouts worth researching:

  • Red Ace — aggressive Life-burn strategy, early strong performer
  • Blue Green Luffy — DON!! acceleration, flexible and powerful
  • Blue Buggy — swarm strategy with the unlimited Prisoner mechanic

For Collectors

Leader parallels are the most liquid cards because they appeal to both players and collectors. Ace, Luffy, Blackbeard, and Yamato are the first four to monitor. The Secret Rares for Ace and Blackbeard are the headline chase cards for collectors in this set.

The three Manga Rares are the long-term hold. Given the emotional significance of the Marineford characters and the consistently high demand for Manga Rares across all sets, OP-16 is worth watching closely for collector value.

For Openers

OP-16 is a compelling box to open right now. The Marineford theme means iconic character art across the set and the excitement of pulling an Ace or Blackbeard Secret Rare is real. Bandai does not publish official pull rates so treat any estimates you see online as community approximations rather than confirmed figures.

Historical data suggests box prices often dip 2–4 weeks after release. If you’re not in a rush, waiting until early July may get you a better price per box.

For New Players

If you’re brand new to the One Piece Card Game, one of the six new Starter Decks releasing alongside OP-16 is the perfect entry point. Each is built around one of the new leaders and is playable straight out of the box. Not sure how the game works yet? Our complete beginner’s guide to the One Piece Card Game walks you through everything from setup to win conditions.

OP-16 and the Current Standard Format

OP-16 is fully legal in Standard format alongside OP-09 through OP-15. The set adds significant new archetypes and the unlimited Prisoner of Impel Down mechanic creates strategic options that didn’t exist before June 12. For players focused on competitive play this is the current format — everything else is context.

For a full breakdown of what’s currently legal in Standard and how the rotation system works see our One Piece TCG buyer’s guide.
