What Is Ashes of the Empire?

Ashes of the Empire is the eighth expansion set for Star Wars Unlimited, published by Fantasy Flight Games. It follows A Lawless Time (Set 7, March 2026) and continues the Rotation Symbol B batch, so it stays Premier-legal until March 2028. The set has 264 cards and introduces a new keyword, new token types, and a thematic focus on the chaotic period after the Empire’s fall: Imperial remnants, Mandalorian factions, and the birth of the New Republic.

The Era and Theme

Ashes of the Empire is about what comes after the Empire falls. The Battle of Endor is the anchor point: Imperial remnants are still fighting, Mandalorian clans are reasserting themselves, and the New Republic is trying to establish order. It’s one of the richest character rosters of any SWU set, with familiar faces from the original trilogy, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and the New Republic era.

Key Characters

Luke Skywalker — One of the two Spotlight Deck leaders. His playstyle revolves around healing: his leader ability triggers after a unit’s attack ends and heals units, which pairs with cards that damage themselves for powerful effects. Han Solo and Leia Organa appear in his Spotlight Deck.

Emperor Palpatine — The second Spotlight Deck leader, in full Emperor form. His deck is built around battlefield control and manipulation, and he’s specifically capable of stacking multiple Advantage tokens on a single unit.

Grand Admiral Thrawn — Appeared in Jump to Lightspeed and received significant support here, with more When Defeated abilities that synergize with his leader ability.

Bo-Katan Kryze — A new leader and a primary source of Mandalorian tokens, which arrive in play already Shielded.

Grogu — Makes his Star Wars Unlimited debut in this set.

Ahsoka Tano — Continues her presence in the New Republic era.

Leia Organa and Han Solo — Both appear in Luke’s Spotlight Deck, and Leia Organa has the new Support keyword.

New Keyword: Support

Support is the headline new keyword. When you play a unit with Support, you may immediately attack with another friendly unit, and that attacking unit gains all of the Support unit’s abilities for that attack.

Fantasy Flight’s preview example: play Leia Organa (Support), then attack with another unit, which gains Leia’s On Attack ability to deal 1 damage to itself and heal 2 damage from your base. With Luke’s leader ability healing after the attack, the self-damage is nearly free and your base gains 2 health.

New Tokens

Advantage token — Gives a unit a temporary boost when it attacks or defends, and is discarded immediately afterward. It’s fast and explosive rather than permanent.

Mandalorian token — Created by cards like Bo-Katan Kryze. Mandalorian tokens arrive in play already Shielded, making them sturdier than standard tokens and enabling defensive and sacrifice-based strategies.

Shield Tokens

Ashes of the Empire contains more Shield tokens than any previous Star Wars Unlimited set. Between Mandalorian tokens arriving Shielded, heavily armored Imperial and New Republic units, and cards built to generate and interact with Shields, shield-based strategies are a significant part of the ASH meta.

Spotlight Decks

Two pre-built 50-card Spotlight Decks released with the set:

Luke Skywalker Spotlight Deck — Healing synergies, Han Solo, and Leia Organa, with 4 Special-rarity cards not found in booster packs.

Emperor Palpatine Spotlight Deck — Battlefield control, built to outlast opponents through tempo and Advantage tokens, also with 4 Special-rarity cards.

Spotlight Decks are the best entry point if you’re new to the game.

Pack Contents

Each Ashes of the Empire booster pack contains 16 cards:

• About 9 Common cards
• 3 Uncommon cards
• 1 Rare or Legendary card
• 1 Leader card
• 1 Base/Token card
• 1 guaranteed Hyperspace Foil card

Carbonite Edition packs are premium collector boosters with the highest concentration of Hyperspace, Prestige, and Serialized Prestige cards.

Cross-Set Synergies

Ashes of the Empire was designed with several existing Premier leaders in mind:

Grand Admiral Thrawn (Jump to Lightspeed) — More When Defeated abilities to trigger his passive.

Rey (Legends of the Force) — More Force cards for her Force-focused kit.

Padmé Amidala (Secrets of Power) — More ways to trigger her mechanics.

If you run any of these leaders, check the ASH card list for easy upgrades. Note that Jump to Lightspeed, Legends of the Force, and Secrets of Power all rotate in March 2027, while Ashes of the Empire stays legal until March 2028.

What Came After Ashes of the Empire: Homeworlds (Set 9)

Homeworlds released on October 9, 2026, with prerelease events the week before. It focuses on the invaders and defenders of various homeworlds across the galaxy, with over 260 new cards (the main set code is HMW), and it introduces:

• Fortify — A new keyword that lets you upgrade your base for the first time. Fortify cards attach to your base when played.
• Beast tokens — Ground-unit tokens with 3 Power and 3 HP.
• Weakness tokens — A reverse Experience token that gives -1/-1.
• Grand Moff Tarkin — The game’s first leader that deploys as the Death Star, at 9 resources.

Its two Spotlight Decks are led by Chewbacca and Grand Moff Tarkin. Homeworlds is Rotation Symbol B, like Ashes of the Empire. Looking ahead, Fantasy Flight’s 2027 roadmap includes Legacy of Skywalker, the Twin Suns decks System Overlord and Galaxy at War, and Icons.
