Ashes of the Empire — Set 8 of Star Wars Unlimited — released worldwide on July 17, 2026. Prereleases ran July 10–16. The set is now fully available at Skillshotz Gaming in Deerfield Beach.

Set in the era of the Battle of Endor and the rise of the New Republic, this is the set that brought the fall of the Galactic Empire to the table — and with it some of the most beloved characters in the entire Star Wars universe.

What Is Ashes of the Empire?

Ashes of the Empire is the eighth expansion set for Star Wars Unlimited, published by Fantasy Flight Games. It follows A Lawless Time (Set 7, March 2026) and continues the Rotation Symbol B batch, meaning it will remain Premier-legal until March 2028. The set contains 264 cards and introduces a new keyword, two new token types, and a thematic focus on the chaotic period following the Empire’s fall — Imperial remnants, Mandalorian factions, and the birth of the New Republic.

The Era and Theme

As the name suggests, Ashes of the Empire is all about what comes after the Empire falls. The Battle of Endor is the anchor point — everything in this set flows from that pivotal moment in the Star Wars timeline. Imperial remnants are still fighting. Mandalorian clans are reasserting themselves. The New Republic is trying to establish order in a galaxy that doesn’t quite know what comes next.

This makes for one of the richest character rosters of any SWU set to date, with familiar faces from the original trilogy, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and the broader New Republic era all appearing together.

Key Characters

Luke Skywalker

One of the two Spotlight Deck leaders. Luke’s playstyle revolves around healing — his leader ability triggers after a unit’s attack ends and heals units, synergizing with cards that damage themselves to gain powerful effects. His kit pairs naturally with Han Solo and Leia Organa, both of whom appear in his pre-built Spotlight Deck.

Emperor Palpatine

The second Spotlight Deck leader, returning in full Emperor form after his appearance as Chancellor Palpatine in Secrets of Power. His playstyle focuses on manipulation and battlefield control — his deck is built around controlling the flow of the game rather than racing opponents.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

Thrawn appeared in Jump to Lightspeed and received significant support in Ashes of the Empire — more cards with When Defeated abilities designed to synergize with his leader ability. If you’ve been running Thrawn, this set strengthens that archetype considerably.

Bo-Katan Kryze

A notable new leader and the primary source of the new Mandalorian token. Her leader ability creates Mandalorian token units, which enter play with a Shield token already attached — making them more resilient than standard tokens and opening up interesting defensive and sacrifice-based strategies.

Grogu

Grogu makes his Star Wars Unlimited debut in Ashes of the Empire. His inclusion alongside Bo-Katan and the broader Mandalorian theme makes him a natural fit for that archetype.

Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka appears in Ashes of the Empire, continuing her presence in the New Republic era alongside her connections to Force-based strategies from Legends of the Force.

Leia Organa and Han Solo

Both appear as support cards in Luke Skywalker’s Spotlight Deck. Han Solo has strong HP for a 4-cost unit and grants any unit three Advantage tokens when he enters play — though he damages himself on entry. Leia Organa has the Support keyword and damages herself with her ability while healing your base, making her a natural fit in Luke’s healing-focused shell.

New Keyword: Support

Support is the headline new keyword for Ashes of the Empire. When you play a unit with Support, you may immediately attack with another friendly unit — and that attacking unit gains all of the Support unit’s abilities for that attack.

The example from the official preview: play Leia Organa (Support), then attack with another unit which gains Leia’s On Attack ability to deal 1 damage to itself and heal 2 damage from your base. Because Luke’s leader ability triggers after the attack ends and can heal that unit, the self-damage becomes essentially free while your base gains 2 health. Support opens up complex chains of effects and creates interesting tempo plays that weren’t possible before.

New Tokens

Advantage Token

The Advantage Token replaced the Experience Token in Ashes of the Empire. A unit with an Advantage token gets a temporary boost — it’s used when the unit attacks or defends, then discarded immediately after. Fast and explosive rather than permanent. Emperor Palpatine is specifically capable of stacking multiple Advantage Tokens on a single unit.

Mandalorian Token

Created by cards like Bo-Katan Kryze, Mandalorian tokens arrive in play already Shielded — built-in protection that makes them more resilient than standard tokens and opens up defensive and sacrifice-based strategies that regular token generators don’t support as well.

Shield Tokens

Ashes of the Empire contains more Shield tokens than any previous Star Wars Unlimited set. Between Mandalorian tokens arriving Shielded, the heavily armored Imperial and New Republic units, and new cards designed to generate and interact with Shield tokens — shield-based strategies are a significant part of the early ASH meta.

Spotlight Decks

Two pre-built 50-card Spotlight Decks released alongside the main set — designed to get you playing immediately out of the box.

Luke Skywalker Spotlight Deck

Healing synergies, Han Solo, and Leia Organa. Luke’s ability heals units after they attack, enabling self-damaging cards to operate with minimal downside. Includes 4 Special-rarity cards not found in booster packs.

Emperor Palpatine Spotlight Deck

Battlefield control and manipulation. Palpatine’s deck is designed to outlast opponents through tempo and Advantage Token accumulation. Includes 4 Special-rarity cards not found in booster packs.

Spotlight Decks are the best entry point if you’re new to the game or want to jump into Ashes of the Empire without cracking packs.

Pack Contents

Each Ashes of the Empire booster pack contains 16 cards:

• Approximately 9 Common cards
• 3 Uncommon cards
• 1 Rare or Legendary card
• 1 Leader card
• 1 Base/Token card
• 1 Hyperspace Foil card (guaranteed)

Carbonite Edition packs are also available — premium collector boosters with the highest concentration of Hyperspace, Prestige, and Serialized Prestige cards.

Cross-Set Synergies

Ashes of the Empire was designed with several existing Premier leaders in mind:

Grand Admiral Thrawn (Jump to Lightspeed) — More When Defeated abilities to trigger his passive. This archetype got a meaningful upgrade.

Rey (Legends of the Force) — More Force cards to fuel her Force-focused kit.

Padmé Amidala (Secrets of Power) — More ways to trigger her Disclose-adjacent mechanics.

If you’re running any of these leaders in your current Premier deck, check the ASH card list carefully — there are likely easy upgrades that significantly improve your existing list.
